The Village Tap, located at 237 E Main St, is hosting a fundraising benefit for local music organizer and open mic night MC Chris McCarthy on Saturday, August 23, from 4pm to 10pm.
Well-known in the Manchester community for decades, Chris was born in New York and spent time in Pennsylvania before moving to Michigan and settling in the Ypsilanti area. Chris moved to Manchester in 1982 and took up carpentry. In 1984, he got his builder’s license and established Chris McCarthy Construction.
Having several friends who were involved in music, Chris got the itch himself, working with several local artists and eventually starting his own project, Studio 542. He has been a roadie, sound tech, drummer, vocalist, songwriter, and promoter throughout his life.
Chris has worked with area organizations to procure bands for the Manchester Men’s Club Fireworks beer tent and organized the music acts for Manchester 3rd Thursdays. Chris has also served as the MC for the weekly Village Tap Open Mic nights since 2016.
In spring 2025, Chris was diagnosed with a life-threatening illness. While he’s had to take a break from work and being the MC at the open mic night, he continues to promote the open mic night and other local music events.
In support of Chris and his battle, we invite all musicians, friends, and acquaintances to a day of music, munchies, and more music! A silent auction will also be held during the event. Donations to Chris are gratefully accepted through Zelle (517-937-3864) or mailed directly to Chris at 542 W Main St, Manchester, Michigan 48158.
Admission to the benefit will be free for everyone and all musicians are encouraged to come and play. Musicians, please contact John Mooneyham to sign up at: childsmonday2day@gmail.com. Additionally, there will be limited potluck food items donated by local businesses available with any donation. The Village Tap kitchen will be open for menu food purchases. To donate gifts, contact Missy Covill at MissyCovill@gmail.com.
