Steve Head, Manchester Community Schools’s superintendent, reported last week that Dr. Christine Deacons has been sworn in as the district’s newest board member. Dr. Deacons is replacing Sarah Roth, who resigned as she applied for a job with the school district, which created a conflict of interest.

Dr. Deacons earned a BA in Education then spent 15 years in the finance industry before returning to school to earn her PhD in Educational Leadership. She then served as the Director of Academic Support Programs at Eastern Michigan University for a decade, where she oversaw a grant program dedicated to supporting vulnerable students as well as teaching courses in Human Development and Learning, and Diverse Children, Families, and Communities, and worked as an educational technology consultant. She was then recruited and served for two years as Vice President of Student Success for Ready Education, a global technology company. In 2023 she co-authored a paper on using machine learning to identify students who may need additional support. In her current semi-retirement, she is focused on writing and supporting educational initiatives that work for children and families.

In addition to her professional work, Dr. Deacons serves as Vice Chair on the Board of Directors for the Student Advocacy Center of Michigan, and is on the Advisory Committee for the My Future Fund program, coordinated through the Washtenaw Intermediate School District.

The district states, “Christine’s multifaceted background as a former teacher, educational leader, and technology expert provides a valuable perspective to the school board, with a focus on data-driven decision-making and ensuring equitable outcomes for all students.”
