by Sara Swanson
Manchester area precincts held elections yesterday with a Washtenaw Intermediate School District (WISD) Career Tech Education Millage on the ballot. The millage proposal passed 54.21% yes to 45.79% no.
Turnout in our area was highest in precincts with all residents living in the WISD, like the City of Manchester and lower in precincts containing a significant percentage residents in non-WISD school districts who did not have anything on the ballot this election, like Bridgewater Township. The City of Manchester had a turnout of 26.22%; Manchester Township had a turnout of 21.45%; Bridgewater Township had a turnout of 16.03%; Freedom Township had a turnout of 28.81%; and Sharon Township had a turnout of 25.53%.
In the Manchester area, the millage proposal only passed in the City of Manchester with 267 yes to 216 no (55% yes to 44% no). The remaining precincts all leaned toward no on the millage with Manchester Township voting 287 no to 215 yes (57% no to 42% yes), Bridgewater Township voting 154 no to 81 yes (65% no to 34% yes), Freedom Township voting 200 no to 167 yes (54% no to 45% yes), and Sharon Township voting 270 no to 164 yes (62% no to 37% yes).
City of Manchester voters also voted for Mayor and City Council members, though those positions were all uncontested. Current mayor, Patricia Vailliencourt was reelected with 334 votes. Current city council members Cindy Dresch, Steve Harvey, and Amelia Woods (who was appointed in February to fill Patrick DuRussel’s seat) were all elected to 4-year term seats,; Dresch with 315 votes, Harvey with 307 votes, and Woods with 269 votes. Herb Mahony was elected with 316 votes to a 2-year term seat currently held by Marty Way.
