The Friends of Watkins Lake State Park (FoWL) are requesting helping hands to join them for a volunteer stewardship workday to be held at Watkins Lake State Park and County Preserve, Saturday, December 6, from 10am to 12:30pm. Volunteers will help to remove and treat invasive autumn olive with the broader objective of promoting and re-establishing native habitat on-site, as well as removing and safety hazards.

“This is a fun opportunity to start off Saturday rolling up the sleeves at a beautiful local amenity and working alongside fellow members of the community for a good cause,” stated FoWL board member Spencer Kellum. “A great opportunity to meet fellow locals who enjoy the outdoors and Watkins Lake State Park as well. Hopefully everyone leaves with a new friend or two!” The workday is being held in conjunction with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) and with support from the Stewardship Network. The park is located at 14801 Arnold Rd, Brooklyn.

Sturdy boots and work pants are encouraged as well as work gloves and loppers. Work gloves and tools will also be available. Snacks, coffee, and water will also be provided.

RSVP to friends@watkinslake.online.

Watkins Lake State Park and County Preserve includes a waterfowl refuge that is used by thousands of migratory waterfowl in the spring and fall, as well as for breeding during the summer months. The park is also home to many unique plants, insects, songbirds, and other wildlife. FoWL aspires to provide stewardship, education, and advocacy for the park in coordination with the MDNR.
