Local environmental organizations are raising the alarm after Norvell Township Board announced late last month that they’ve received an application for a proposed 900-acre aggregate mining operation from American Aggregates of Michigan, Inc. out of Dearborn. Of particular note is that the operation would border Watkins Lake State Park and County Preserve, which is located in Manchester Township and Norvell Township.

The township states that they have initiated a third-party review by various experts and interested agencies of the submitted application materials, and upon completion the findings will be presented to the Planning Commission, which will host a public hearing. They state that the hearing will provide an opportunity for residents to express their support or concerns regarding the proposed project.

The application is not currently available to view online but may be viewed in person at the township office during regular office hours by appointment.

The township states, “The Norvell Township Board of Trustees remains committed to keeping our community informed throughout this process. We recognize the importance of protecting the natural beauty and resources that make our township unique. The application will be thoroughly reviewed to ensure compliance with all applicable laws and zoning ordinances. Once the date and time for the public hearing are confirmed, we will promptly share that information with the public.”
