Obituary: Mary “Sue“ Emily Marshall

Mary “Sue” Emily Marshall
Mary Emily Marshall, better known to her family, friends, and many loyal customers as Sue, passed away peacefully at her home in Manchester on Monday afternoon, January 5, 2026. She was 77. Sue had suffered from a long-term illness, made significantly worse by her recent advance stage cancer. Sue’s husband of 55 years, Joe Marshall, was at her side when she passed. Sue was also being attended to by her hospice nurse and daily caregiver. Our family would like to sincerely thank and express our deep appreciation to our Elara Caring and Visiting Angels hospice teams for their kind, patient, and supportive professionalism that allowed Sue to comfortably live her final days at home and us to have as much quality time as possible with her. We firmly believe that she is now in a much better place.
Sue’s family and friends will gather for her visitation on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, from 3pm to 7pm, at the Eineder Funeral Homes — Manchester Chapel, and from 2pm to 3pm, on Thursday, January 15, 2026, at the funeral home, which is located at 207 E Duncan St, Manchester. Her funeral service will be held at 3pm on Thursday, January 15, 2026, at Eineder Funeral Homes — Manchester Chapel. Sue’s celebratory memorial service will be conducted by Pastor Cheryl Kaiser of the Manchester Emanuel United Church of Christ.
Sue graduated from Dondero High School in Royal Oak, Mich., in 1966. She attended Eastern Michigan University, where she followed in her mother’s and aunt’s footsteps and obtained her undergraduate degree, majoring in Special Education, her State of Michigan Teaching Certificate, and ultimately three additional Master’s degrees, specific areas of Special Education. Sue met the love of her life, Joseph J. Marshall, fell in love, and joined in marriage at the Central Woodward Christian Church in Detroit, Mich., on August 15, 1970. The couple found and were able to purchase their dream home in Manchester in 1979, the Jon D. VanDuyn house. After moving in, Sue started doing what she had trained for her entire adult life and deeply enjoyed doing, she began tutoring grade-school children from the greater Manchester area. In 1983, Sue and her husband purchased the historic Widmayer Hardware Store commercial building, which they turned into the nationally known and respected Manchester Antique Mall. She will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved her.
Sue will be deeply missed by her husband of 55 years, Joe Marshall; her brother-in-law, Dr. Tom Marshall; one niece; and many friends and loyal customers. She is preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, brother and his wife, and aunt and uncle.
