Irish Hills Concerned Citizens (IHCC), a new nonprofit group formed to protect Watkins Lake State Park and County Preserve, its birds and wildlife, and the rural character of the surrounding region, is hosting an informational meeting to explore the impact of the proposed Norvell Township Gravel Mine. The meeting is scheduled for Saturday, January 24, from 10am to 11:30am, at WellWise Services, 107 Chicago St, in Brooklyn. Attend in person or online. Info at IHCCinfo.org
On November 17, 2025, American Aggregates of Michigan, Inc., applied to Norvell Township to build and operate a large aggregate sand and gravel mine that would border Watkins Lake State Park and County Preserve. The Michigan Zoning and Enabling Act requires the applicant to demonstrate the “need” for the materials and that the proposed aggregate mining operation will not impose “very serious consequences” on the township and community.
The meeting on January 24 will provide details about the proposal, permitting requirements under the Zoning Enabling Act, the review process, and how residents can best participate and be heard. Presentations will be provided by members of Friends of Watkins Lake State Park; Mike Wilczynski, a geologist with Pangea, LLC; and Harmony Fierke-Gmazel, a planner with Michigan State University Extension. Presentations will be followed by a panel discussion and questions from the audience.
Norvell Township officials and Department of Natural Resources staff have been invited to attend. Norvell Township is expected to hold a public hearing to take public comment on the proposal after the township determines it to be complete.
Visit the IHCC website (IHCCinfo.org) for more information, including on attending the meeting online, links to the proposal, and other relevant documents. Contact IHCC at protectpark@IHCCinfo.org
