Ready…  Set… GO!

The Manchester Cub Scouts held the Pinewood Derby, an annual tradition, on Saturday, January 24, this year at Emanuel Church. Cars are made by each Scout from a small block of wood, with carving and custom paint jobs. They are then raced in “heats,” including two to four cars, to find out which one has the fastest speed. It’s an exciting time for the boys, many of whom look forward to the event all year long.

Dedicated parents and volunteers bring in and assemble some complex equipment and monitor the progress of the race. It’s a family event that includes everyone. Family and friends, including grandparents, are on hand to provide support and cheers!

Each Scout gets his five seconds of fame on the track for two heats. The heat doesn’t last long, so don’t blink. But overall, whatever works. Every car is different each year, as Scouts change the design to make their car the fastest and best-looking. Awards are given to all participants, from trophies to certificates.

Next January it’ll be back — wait for the fun to start.
