The annual Community Day returned to Luther C. Klager Elementary School on the last Thursday of the school year.  Community Day is an event that invites local community and business leaders to come to the school to teach the children about their jobs and services that they provide to the local community.  Set up like a job fair, children rotate around the different tables with their classes to learn about the incredible things happening in the local community of Manchester.

Once again, the children were treated to eight different local presentations.  The Farmer’s Market was on hand to teach children about the market and all they provide to the community.  The Historical Society came and taught the children about the incredible history of Manchester.  The American 1 Credit Union came to teach children about money.  Each student left their table with a new piggy bank to practice saving their money.  The Washtenaw County Sherriff’s Department was on hand to teach children about safety.  The children also learned about their police car and were provided with treat bags.  The Manchester Township Volunteer Fire Department came and taught the children about fire safety, and of course about their big fire truck.  Children were provided with goody bags and fire fighter helmets.  The Manchester District Library came to present the children with this year’s Summer Reading Theme.  The Manchester Mirror was on hand to teach the children about how the local paper is made and provided them with copies of the most recent paper with articles about their own school.

This year, there was a new addition with the Lion’s Club.  The Lion’s Club taught the children about the fundraising work they do around town, including the candy drive and the toy drive.  Thanks to the abundant generosity of Manchester residents over the years, an excess of toys was left over after the last toy drive.  Each Klager student and three-year-old Manchester Early Childhood student walked away with a new toy to take home for the summer.

Community Day proved to be the perfect blend of learning, exploring, and spending just enough time outside to see the “cool” big vehicles.  A huge thank you is extended to the enthusiastic volunteers from the community who stepped in to make this year’s Community Day a wonderful success!
