“There’s really not much new and different this year,” said Jeff Mann, chair of this year’s Manchester Annual Chicken Broil. But trust us, it’s never the same-old, same-old event. Everyone anticipates the Broil all year long, and the crispy roasted chicken and home-made coleslaw are just once a year treats for most of us. And then there’s the social aspect of the Broil … seeing old friends and neighbors who moved away come back to town to see if it’s as good as they remember, and seeing people from surrounding areas who’ve heard about it since they were kids and are finally wondering what the fuss is all about deciding to finally try it out.
Come on out to Alumni Memorial Field from 4pm – 8pm on Saturday, July 18 for the 73rd Annual Chicken Broil! Pre-sale tickets are available online for $13 and also at many local businesses. Or get your tickets at the gate the day of the Broil for a small additional fee.
Those who haven’t been in a few years may be surprised by the convenience of a drive-thru pickup. Each year the pickup route is tweaked a little and this year is no different … watch for the signs for direction when you get to town; and there are shuttles for those who want to park, walk up, and eat their meals on the picnic tables at the field just like the olden days. There’s plenty of room and time for socializing there!
Of course, planners hope for good weather. Mann says, “A nice, warm, sunshiny day would be perfect. Too often recently it’s been just enough ‘off’ with early rain or even threatening weather, and people just decide not to come. That hurts us.” Remedying this problem is the job of the local clergy, who are asked to entreat the heavens for perfect weather conditions. “We have a lot of new clergy in town this summer and we would love it if they join together on our behalf!” he concludes.
Don’t forget there’s fun for kids too. The bounce house will be back along with entertainment designed for all ages. Don’t miss it!
“We know how to cook chicken, and we’re going to do it!” said Mann,
And the rest of us can’t wait.
