PUBLIC NOTICE
Sanitary Sewer Overflow – July 3, 2026

The City of Manchester is providing notice of a sanitary sewer overflow that occurred at the Manchester Wastewater Treatment Plant, located at 221 Hibbard Street, on Friday, July 3, 2026.

At approximately 6:00 p.m., the Wastewater Treatment Plant experienced a power outage caused by the severe storm that impacted the area. Although the facility is equipped with an emergency generator, a problem with the automatic transfer system prevented the generator from supplying power to the plant.

As a result, an estimated 10,000 gallons of untreated wastewater overflowed into the River Raisin between approximately 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. An electrician was able to manually transfer the facility to generator power at approximately 8:00 p.m., stopping the overflow.

The City has reported the incident to the appropriate regulatory agencies and is evaluating the cause of the transfer system failure to help prevent similar incidents in the future.

The City of Manchester regrets this incident and is committed to maintaining the integrity of its wastewater system and protecting the environment. Residents with questions may contact the City of Manchester at (734) 428-7877 during normal business hours.
