Michael Sessions, City of Manchester manager, reports that in light of multiple concerns brought to the city about vehicles failing to stop at the 4-way-stop intersection of M-52 and Main Street, MDOT has agreed to review the intersection again to determine whether any additional traffic mitigation measures are warranted.

Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) conducted a traffic detail operation last August at the intersection involving five officers over three and a half hours. They counted 1,848 vehicles traveling through the intersection and conducted 22 traffic stops resulting in five citations for blatant disregard of stop signs, with 1.19% of vehicles committing rolling stops or blatantly disregarding the stop signs.

Sessions stated, “During my conversation with MDOT, I offered to split the cost of installing solar-powered stop signs if they believed that would improve safety. However, that request was declined pending the results of a new traffic review.” He explained that MDOT makes the determination of where to put “traffic mitigation devices” based on crash data taken and compiled from responding police officer reports.

Sessions said, “I understand this may not be the answer many residents were hoping for, but at this point, our ability to influence the process is limited.” He added, “MDOT has committed to keeping me informed as they complete their review, and I will share any new information as it becomes available.”
