No lasting contamination to River Raisin from July 3 sewage overflow

On July 3 a power outage and failure of the back-up generator at the City of Manchester’s wastewater-treatment plant caused 10,000 gallons of untreated wastewater to overflow into the River Raisin over a two-hour period. Water samples from upstream and downstream of the area where the overflow occurred were taken and sent to the Washtenaw County Health Department. Kristen Schweighoefer, environmental health director at the health department, reports that the downstream samples show similar levels of coliform as the upstream samples, demonstrating no lasting impact to water quality from the accidental contamination.
