Irish Hills Concerned Citizens (IHCC), a local nonprofit organized to oppose a gravel mine proposed next to Watkins Lake State Park & County Preserve, invites community members to its summer picnic on Wednesday, August 26, from 3pm to 7pm, at WJ Hayes State Park. Hayes State Park is located 10 minutes south of Watkins Lake at 1220 Wamplers Lake Rd. Use either parking lot to access the pavilion, which organizers have reserved for the day.

Sybil Kolon, president of IHCC, states, “Food, beverages, and necessary accessories will be provided. Guests are asked to bring a dish to pass. The gathering will include family activities, live music, games, swimming, a guided nature walk, IHCC updates, opportunities to meet fellow community members, and a presentation about the history of Hayes and Watkins state parks. Attendees will also have an opportunity to participate in IHCC’s ‘Speak Up for State Parks — Be Counted’ effort.”

Because the picnic is being held within a Michigan state park, a Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry. Kolon adds, “IHCC encourages residents to support Michigan’s state parks by obtaining a passport or riding with someone whose vehicle already has one.”
