ALI announces September classes

The Adult Learners Institute of Chelsea (ALI-Michigan) supports life-long learning by offering a diverse array of enrichment classes and workshops for adults in south central Michigan, including periodic classes in Manchester. The fall 2026 term kicked off in early August. Fall 2026 classes are scheduled from mid September through mid November, and class catalogs have been mailed out and also distributed at various sites in the area.
September’s classes begin with America’s favorite sport — football! If you’re a beginner and feel left out by all the game talk, come to Football 101, taught by retired coach Paul Schudel. He will start slowly with the very basics, and welcomes questions. This two-session class meets on Wednesdays, September 21 and 28, from 1pm to 3pm, at the Chelsea Senior Center. The class is both in-person and on Zoom.
Next up is Stephen Kolokithas, gemologist and jewelry creator, owner of Set in Stone in Chelsea. Join Stephen for an unforgettable journey in From Mine to Masterpiece: A Gemstone Journey through Africa. Stephen traveled to Kenya and Tanzania last summer, where he explored gemstone sources, ranging from 1,000 feet below the earth’s surface to alluvial deposits. Participants will have the opportunity to handle real gemstones and ask questions throughout the class. This class has two sessions: Tuesdays, September 22 and 29, from 10am to 12pm, at the Chelsea State Bank (downtown office). It is both in-person and on Zoom.
Join Steve Daut, geologist, computer expert, and storyteller, for travel of a different sort in Oaxaca: A State of Mexico (Travelogue) on Thursday, September 24, from 1 to 3pm, at the Chelsea Senior Center. Steve has spent two months over the last two years in this large Mexican state. He has visited its rugged mountains and beautiful beaches, and will describe the exports, cultural attractions, and artwork of this magical place. This class is both in-person and on Zoom.
