Mentor program launching for first-generation farmers

Are you a first-generation farmer? The Michigan First-Generation Farmer Mentorship Program will launch its first pilot cohort in October 2026 made up of 10 farmers who did not grow up on or inherit a family farm and who will be matched with experienced mentors for one-on-one guidance tailored to their farming goals. Mentors and mentees will be paid.

This 20-hour farmer mentorship offers personalized, hands-on guidance. Mentors have a wide range of specialties, including flowers, poultry, herbs, mixed vegetables, tree fruits and nuts, small fruit, livestock, dairy, maple syrup, and agritourism.

Applications for this inaugural cohort will be accepted by MSU extension through late September. Apply at https://form.jotform.com/261465085350052.
