The Eddy Discovery Center has announced its public programs for October 2026, sponsored by the Waterloo Natural History Association. The Gerald E. Eddy Discovery Center is located at 17030 Bush Rd, Chelsea, Mich., just 10 minutes north of Sharon Township, in the Waterloo Recreation Area.

Each program costs $2/person or $5/family (free for members of the Waterloo Natural History Association). Please register for the program you wish to attend by emailing waterloonha@gmail.com with your name, phone number, and number of people attending.

FALL BIRDING AT WATERLOO: 2pm–3:30pm, Sunday, November 1. Join Michigan Master Naturalist & Haehnle Sanctuary chairman Steve Jerant for this fall birdwatching event for all levels of birdwatchers. First-time and young birders are encouraged to attend. We will review binocular basics and learn some simple ways to see and hear birds.  Bring binoculars if you have them. Don’t have binoculars? No problem! Jackson Audubon is providing several pairs of binoculars to loan for the walk. Program limited to 15 participants.

SANDHILL CRANE TOUR: 2pm–4:30pm, Sunday, November 8. Join Michigan Master Naturalist Doug Jackson to see sandhill cranes preparing for their fall migration. We will carpool from the Discovery Center parking lot to view cranes in the fields around the Waterloo Recreation Area. We’ll then stop at the Haehnle Sanctuary to see the birds coming into their nighttime roosting area. Visitors can expect to see some of these magnificent birds at close range. Bring binoculars and cameras. Program limited to 15 participants.

ENVIRONMENTAL ADAPTATION: 2pm–3:30pm, Sunday, November 15. Science Alive will present a live-animal program that explores the structure, form, and habits of animals and their relationship to factors within the animal’s respective environment. Participants will observe a wide variety of animal adaptations as they experience hands-on amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals.
