The Manchester Community Schools Board of Education met Monday night to vote on board policies, name an auditor liaison, approve COVID-19 changes to student handbooks and discuss what is going on in schools across Manchester.

To begin the meeting, the board heard from Jeff Foulke, from the Pittsfield Fire Department and Washtenaw Area Mutual Aid Association, which represents 21 fire departments across Washtenaw County and two other counties, who thanked the board for letting the fire departments use the Ackerson building for training to practice what would happen if there were a school shooting. He also presented certificates of appreciation to transportation director, Deb Heskett and maintenance supervisor, Bill O'Brien (who wasn't present, but whose certificate was accepted by superintendent Bezeau) for the assistance they provided in making the training event happen.

The board then voted unanimously to reconfirm the approval of the Manchester Community Schools COVID-19 extended learning plan. The superintendent noted that this would most likely be the last time the board will have to confirm or reconfirm a vote regarding the COVID-19 extended learning plan as the state may be placing it in local control for what COVID-19 protocols will be taken. The board also voted unanimously to enact the revised and new board policies

The board also chose unanimously to make board member Mike Austin the auditor liaison. The auditor liaison will work with MCS finance director, Shannon Cajic ahead of the August 23 audit.

The board then moved to vote and approve language revisions to Klager, Riverside and Junior and Senior high schools’ student handbooks that would change COVID-19 related language to ‘if needed’, meaning the schools would have the option to reinstate COVID-19 protocols on an as-needed basis.

In terms of resignations, Mike Maisano, a tech coordinator and Kristin Coffey, a middle school cheer coach, both submitted their resignations.

The board also discussed the Klager MECC PTO Kona Ice truck fundraiser that will be ongoing at every 3rd Thursday of the summer to raise money for field trips, assemblies and teacher wishlists. Riverside was also discussed, with the board acknowledging Mr. Joe Walsh being selected STEM Region 2 integration educator of the year in the state of Michigan.

The board also announced that fall sports will start normally and state funding per student has been increased.
