Recently, I heard that the Manchester Mirror was looking for individuals to write articles on topics that interested them and that may pique the interest of others, ideally with a local focus. So, I reached out and asked if there might be any interest in Michigan music subjects. When possible, Manchester-rooted, but Michigan-centric for sure. The answer? YES! DO IT!

After my panic waned a bit and reality set in, I thought that I should probably explain a bit about my “qualifications“ for penning such pieces. So, here you go, my resume as it were. I’m just a fan. Yes, I am a bit of a musician, mediocre at best. My mom was my biggest supporter. I do have a radio show that is all about Michigan-connected music — more on that later — and I’m obsessed with sound. As in music recording and “live“ music performance. I’m on the Tech Team at The Ark in Ann Arbor, and along with a couple of friends have a once-a-month music series called Manchester Underground. But mostly, I’m just a fan.

Outside of my family and friends, music is the most important thing in my life. Sounds strange, I know, but it’s true. For as long as I can remember, music has played a huge role in my world. All kinds. Any genre. However, I’ve always had a strong interest in local music. And by “local“ I mean Michigan. Wherever I am in this great state I’m within 50 miles of some truly “world-class“ artists most of our readers may have never heard of, and that is my hope: to introduce you to artists, organizations, venues, festivals, etc. that have a Michigan connection. And we have many of those subjects right here in Manchester! Past and present. My hope is to have a piece to share with you once a month.

So, what’s coming up next month? Did you know Manchester is home to one of Michigan’s most prolific songwriters? Most of this artist’s songs are about Michigan. So much so that several notable people, among them former Ark director Dave Siglin, have proposed that this artist be appointed Michigan’s poet laureate. In addition to songwriting, this artist has also written several plays, again with a Michigan theme. Oh, and this artist was also a State Champion High School football coach! Sound interesting? Stay tuned!

In the meantime, if you’re interested in hearing my weekly Michigan-connected radio show that I cohost along with Jackson Smith, tune in every Saturday at 7pm EST to “Songs From The Trail“ at WVBI.net. Until next month, adios!

For as little as $1 a month, you can keep Manchester-focused news coverage alive.
