Since 1922, the National Fire Prevention Association has sponsored the public observance of Fire Prevention Week. It is observed each year during the week of October 9 in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire, which began October 8, 1871, and caused devastating damage to much of the city. Declared a national observance in 1925 by President Calvin Coolidge, it is now the longest-running public health observance in our country.

During Fire Prevention Week, children, adults, and teachers learn how to stay safe in case of a fire. Firefighters provide lifesaving public education in an effort to drastically decrease casualties caused by fires.

This year’s theme for Fire Prevention Week was “Cooking safety starts with YOU. Pay attention to fire prevention™.” If you were unable to attend the open house or would like more information about cooking safety and fire prevention for your family, check out the website at https://www.nfpa.org/Events/Events/Fire-Prevention-Week/About.

Lilly Coe tries on the firefighters’ turnout gear.

The Fire Department’s new truck is nearly ready to put into service.

Some of the demonstrations also doubled as training for the newer firefighters. Veteran firefighter Bill Kerns demonstrated how to use the Jaws of Life tools.

More than 50 people attended the open house event and enjoyed demonstrations, visiting with firefighters, and cider and doughnuts compliments of Alber Orchard.

Ted and Grant enjoyed their visit with Safety Pup! (They also enjoyed their “official” badges and the snacks.)
