State Rep. Felicia Brabec (D, MI-33) [who represents Bridgewater Township in the Manchester area], announced that she would not be running for a third term in the Michigan House of Representatives. Instead, she intends on running for State Senate in Michigan’s 15th District in 2026.

“It has been an honor to serve my constituents, first in Michigan’s 55th State House District and then in the newly drawn 33rd District, over the past three years,” Rep. Brabec said. “My decision to run for State Senate is based on the same vigor and commitment that brought me to public service to begin with. I am excited at the prospect to continue my service with an even larger constituency, building on my work of promoting mental healthcare access and ensuring a prosperous Michigan throughout my tenure.”

Senator Jeff Irwin, who currently holds Michigan’s 15th Senate District [and represents the City of Manchester, Manchester Township, and Bridgewater Township in the Manchester area], will be term limited and cannot seek re-election in 2026. Under Proposal 1, which was approved by Michigan voters in 2022, Michigan legislators can serve up to 12 total years in either chamber before they are term limited. By not seeking re-election to the Michigan House of Representatives, Brabec will be eligible to serve two complete terms in the State Senate if she is elected in 2026.

“Let me be clear: for the next year, my primary focus will continue to be addressing the needs of my constituents and supporting the House Democrats’ efforts to retain and grow the majority,” Rep. Brabec explained. “My bid for the Senate in 2026 is a ways away, and we have serious work to do to support our state between now and then.”

This year alone, the legislature passed more than 500 bills, several of which Rep. Brabec was proud to champion. Through Rep. Brabec’s sponsorship, there are more opportunities to become an organ donor, anti-LGBTQ conversion therapy is no longer legal, seven largely under-resourced school districts, including the Ypsilanti Community Schools, received relief to address school debt, youth in the juvenile justice system will receive a risk and mental health screening, and more.

Notably, Rep. Brabec was instrumental in protecting abortion access, putting a firm end to Right to Work, expanding the Earned Income Tax Credit, and reducing the child-to-counselor ratio in schools. Brabec has leveraged her background as a psychologist, small business owner, Washtenaw County Commissioner, and mom to tap into the needs of Bridgewater Township, Saline Township, Pittsfield Township, the city of Saline, and the city of Ann Arbor.

“While I will dearly miss my work in the legislature, I fully intend for the pause to be brief. There is still significant work to be done, and I look forward to maintaining and strengthening my relationship with community leaders, civic organizations, policy experts, and others who are equally committed to pushing our state forward,” Rep. Brabec said.
