On Saturday, May 9, Washtenaw County residents are encouraged to donate a bag of nonperishable food during Stamp Out Hunger, the nation’s largest one-day food drive. Donations will benefit Food Gatherers, the food bank and food rescue program serving Washtenaw County. Residents who would like to participate in the drive should set their bag of nonperishable food donations next to their mailboxes on Saturday morning, May 9, before their regular mail delivery time.
In 2025, Stamp Out Hunger raised 111,000 pounds of food for Food Gatherers to distribute through its hunger-relief network of 140 partner agencies. Through this network, children, adults, and seniors facing food insecurity can access food at no cost to them.
Food insecurity affects 1 in 7 Washtenaw County residents, meaning they don’t have reliable access to enough healthy food to meet their nutritional needs. Visits to food pantries supported by Food Gatherers remain at record levels as the high costs of food and other essentials impact the community. “Stamp Out Hunger is an important source of food for us,” says Eileen Spring, President and CEO of Food Gatherers. “Last year, the one-day effort provided the equivalent of nearly 93,000 meals for individuals and families in our community who are facing hunger.”
Local letter carriers will deliver orange bags to homes across Washtenaw County to encourage residents to participate in the food drive. These sponsored bags—or any grocery bags—can be filled with shelf-stable items like canned and dry goods and left at mailboxes on Saturday, May 9th. Residents should set donations out before their regular mail delivery time so letter carriers can collect them on their routes. Please recycle unused bags.
Stamp Out Hunger is coordinated by the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) and is sponsored in Washtenaw County by Food Gatherers, United Way of Southeastern Michigan, Brentwood Electric, Busch’s Fresh Food Market, Domino’s, DTE, Kroger, The Mosaic Foundation, NSF, Paragon, Toyota, and Zingerman’s.
People with questions about the drive in their area should ask their letter carrier, contact their local post office, or go to https://www.nalc.org/community-service/food-drive.
Food Gatherers’ mission is to alleviate hunger and eliminate its root causes in Washtenaw County. As the county's food bank and food rescue program, Food Gatherers distributed 10.3 million pounds of food – the equivalent of 8.5 million meals – to more than 140 community partners and programs serving adults, seniors, and children last year. For a list of our partner programs or to learn how you can become involved in the fight against hunger locally, please visit FoodGatherers.org or call 734-761-2796.
The National Association of Letter Carriers represents letter carriers employed by the U.S. Postal Service and retired letter carriers across the country. Founded by Civil War veterans in 1889, the NALC is among the country's oldest labor unions.
