The Adult Learners Institute (ALI Michigan) supports life-long learning by offering a diverse array of online and in-person enrichment classes for adults. ALI’s Fall 2026 catalogs have been mailed out, and can also be found at various sites in the 5HealthyTowns area. ALI’s Fall 2026 term continues with twelve classes in October. Since the list is lengthy, it’s been divided into Parts 1 and 2. This is Part 2, with classes held from mid to late October.

Travel along America’s most famous highway with John Deikas in Route 66 at 100 Years Old: An End-to-end Exploration. An inspiration for books and films, the highway brings up images of roadside diners, motor courts and family vacations in the station wagon. John will share his recent 9,000 mile motorcycle journey from downtown Chicago to the Santa Monica Pier. This In-person and ZOOM class will be held on Monday, October 19 at the Chelsea Senior Center

Theatre buffs and historians will welcome Gary Decker’s Theatre Architecture—From Ancient Greece to the Present. In four Thursday sessions, on October 21 and 28, and November 4 and 18, Gary will show how theatres have been constructed over the centuries, and the development of modern theatre forms for play and opera performances. This class is In-person and will meet at the Chelsea State Bank (Downtown Office).

Bill O’Reilly, professional genealogist and amateur historian, will share a personal account of his own grandparents’ struggles in Tom & Mae—Homesteading, Heartache & Survival. Their story of homesteading in Alberta is just one example of thousands of other pioneering families in North America. This In-person & ZOOM class will be held on Thursday, October 22 at the Chelsea Senior Center.

Remember the days before the internet and going online to get the news? Storyteller Anne Lawrence will relate how folks used to get news “online” in Memories of the Laundry Line. Her presentation will expand to include the roles of sociology, industrialization, ecology, and feminism.  This In-person class will be held on Monday, October 26 at the Chelsea Senior Center.

Do you have a loved one with Autism? Become more informed about Autism from John Rose, who has extensive experience as a teacher consultant and lecturer. He will cover historical treatment of autism, its possible causes, assessments and services. This In-person and ZOOM class is offered in partnership with the Chelsea District Library and is FREE. The class will be held on Wednesday, October 28 at the Chelsea District Library. To register, you must call the library at 734-475-8732 X 219
