Andrew Edward Whelan (July 30 1965 – October 21 2026)

It is with great sadness that we share with you the sudden death of Andrew Edward Whelan on October 21, 2026.

Andrew, the eldest son of Edward and Rosemary Whelan, and brother of Elizabeth, David, and Paul was born on July 30, 1965 in Toronto, Canada. He grew up in Ann Arbor, Michigan and attended Ann Arbor public schools, graduating from Greenhills School.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Michigan Technological University, followed by a master’s degree in Mathematics and a master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, as well as a doctorate in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of Iowa.

Andrew will always be remembered for his kindness to all, and especially to his cats! He enjoyed a wide range of interests which included a model railroad, operating steam engines, sailing, rowing, off-road rallies, cooking, home improvement, playing soccer, refereeing soccer, amateur radio communication, and international travel.

Over several decades he participated in numerous regattas throughout the country, earning a handsome collection of medals and trophies! Andrew especially enjoyed several years of living, working, and traveling in Japan, which included frequent climbs up and down Mount Fuji.

Andrew is survived by his wife Darla Kremer, his parents, his sister, and his brothers.

A memorial service in the Manchester (Michigan) area will be held in the Spring of 2027.
