This week, Wednesday, Feb. 17 is known as Ash Wednesday because of the long tradition of beginning Lent by receiving the sign of ashes. Once again this year, while observing covid precautions, St. Mary Catholic Church will have three Masses, during which all in attendance may receive this penitential sign.

There will be a special 7:00 am “Sunrise Mass” for those whose work or school schedules would prevent them from otherwise receiving ashes, and two additional Masses at 8:30 am and 7:00 pm.

This year we will see an option that is somewhat unusual in the United States but typical in Italy, Poland and other countries. That is, the ashes are sprinkled on the penitent’s head rather than imposed on the forehead. This is especially helpful for those with covid concerns that must be rigorously observed.

All Manchester friends and neighbors are invited to come that day to one of the three Masses at St. Mary Catholic Church, 210 W. Main Street in the Village of Manchester. Receive this sign of the ages with the reminder: “Remember that you are dust and to dust you shall return” or “Turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel.”

Catholics may also want to take the opportunity to go to the Sacrament of Penance. Fr. Bosco will hear confessions for fifteen minutes, beginning one half hour before each of the Masses is to begin.

Lent is a 40-day period of prayer, sacrifice, and charity in preparation for the great feast of Easter! Ash Wednesday is the visual beginning. Please feel welcome to take part in this traditional ritual by attending one of the three Masses at St. Mary’s. If you have any questions, please call Fr. Bosco or the Parish office at 734-428-8811.
